Rabbit ear hygiene

The importance of good rabbit ear hygiene

Preventing ear infections and ear mange

Regular maintenance of the ear canals is crucial for your animal's health. Indeed, the ears of lagomorphs are extremely sensitive and complex organs. They ensure not only hearing but also the thermoregulation of the body. Consequently, a build-up of earwax can quickly encourage the development of bacteria. Moreover, ear mange caused by the mite Psoroptes cuniculi remains a common condition. This condition causes intense itching and painful crusts for the animal. Thus, weekly monitoring helps detect the first signs of inflammation. The use of rabbit ear hygiene products effectively prevents these serious complications. In this way, you guarantee optimal living comfort for your small mammal. A clean ear canal drastically limits the risk of middle or inner ear infection.

Suitable products for safe cleaning

Ear cleaning requires particular attention and precise gestures. You should never use a cotton swab as it risks injuring the eardrum. This is why we offer liquid solutions specifically formulated for their physiology. These lotions dissolve debris without irritating the fragile mucous membrane. On the other hand, an unsuitable product could disrupt the balance of the local skin flora. Furthermore, some care products contain colloidal silver for its soothing and purifying properties. You can apply these drops directly into the entrance of the ear canal. Then, gently massage the base of the ear to spread the product evenly. Your rabbit will remove impurities by naturally shaking its head after the treatment. Regular maintenance also facilitates clinical examinations by your treating veterinarian.

Frequently asked questions about rabbit eye and ear hygiene

How do you treat an ear infection in a rabbit?

Treatment of an ear infection always begins with a consultation with a specialised veterinarian. Indeed, the practitioner must first check the integrity of the eardrum before any application. Then, they generally prescribe antibiotic or anti-inflammatory drops suited to the condition. At the same time, you must maintain excellent rabbit ear hygiene with a gentle cleanser. This preliminary cleaning allows the active ingredients to better penetrate the ear canal. It is crucial to follow the care protocol for the entire indicated duration. A poorly treated ear infection can lead to permanent neurological disorders in the rabbit.

Which eye drops for an ear infection?

It is important not to confuse eye drops with auricular cleaning solutions. By definition, eye drops are medication intended exclusively for ophthalmic use. To treat an ear infection, you must use specific ear drops prescribed by an expert. Using eye drops in the ear could be ineffective or potentially irritating to the area. On the other hand, some active components are sometimes found in both types of products. However, viscosity and pH differ greatly between the eye and the ear. Always favour products dedicated to rabbit ear hygiene available on our website.

What are the antifungal drops for rabbit ears?

Antifungal drops are necessary when fungi or yeasts colonise the ear canal. These pathogens often take advantage of stagnant moisture to multiply rapidly. Products based on colloidal silver offer an interesting natural alternative for rabbit ear hygiene. In addition, some veterinary medicines contain molecules such as clotrimazole or nystatin. These treatments require a precise diagnosis by ear swab to confirm the presence of fungi. Regular application stops the proliferation and restores the health of the skin. Make sure to thoroughly dry the entrance of the ear after each application of the product.
