Horse hoof care: Ointments, oils and products for hoof health

The vital importance of Horse hoof care

The hoof, foundation of the equine athlete

The hoof is a complex and resistant structure. It supports the horse's entire weight at every step. Moreover, it absorbs the shocks of each stride and cushions the impact. The quality of the hoof directly influences locomotion. A healthy hoof is elastic and robust. It prevents lameness and injuries. Neglecting horse hoof care often leads to complications. Rotten frogs are frequently seen. Cracks and fissures in the wall are recurring problems. Good hydration is essential to its structure. The horn must remain supple to fully play its role. Care products act as a protective barrier. Consequently, they maintain the internal water balance of the horn.

Choosing the right ointments and oils for Horse hoof care

The choice of product always depends on the initial condition of the hoof. Ointments are generally very rich and greasy. They deeply nourish the hoof wall. They are ideal for dry and brittle hooves. Fats create a barrier against excess moisture. They are perfect in muddy and humid environments. However, you must avoid smothering the hoof. Application should remain targeted on the wall. Oil is used to bring shine. It penetrates less deeply than ointment. Tars are more specific treatments. They are used to sanitize the frog and sole. They are antiseptic and very protective. Horse hoof care varies with the seasons. You need to hydrate during the dry summer period. You need to dry out in winter when the ground is saturated.

Benefits of regular Horse hoof care

Daily use of quality care products provides many benefits.

Increased resistance: The horn becomes harder against abrasive or difficult terrain.
Disease prevention: Care reduces the incidence of thrush and infections.
Improved elasticity: Hooves retain their essential natural shock-absorbing capacity.
Facilitated healing: Balms promote regrowth and repair of emerging cracks.
Better hydration: The horn's water balance is maintained all year round.
Aesthetics: A well-groomed wall gives the appearance of a horse in excellent health.
Early detection: A care routine allows anomalies to be spotted quickly.

Frequently asked questions about Horse hoof care

When and why should I apply oil to my horse's hooves?

You should apply oil to the hoof when it is clean and dry. Oil mainly serves an aesthetic purpose. It gives the hoof a very shiny appearance. This is ideal before a competition or a public presentation. It also forms a thin protective layer. This layer limits excessive evaporation of internal moisture. Note that oil should not be used on a hoof that is too dry. It could trap moisture on the outside, preventing it from penetrating. A dry hoof needs to be rehydrated with water. Then, a moisturizing ointment is used first. You use oil to maintain the hoof's current condition, not to treat it in depth.

How can I identify and treat common hoof problems (thrush, cracks)?

Thrush is easily recognizable. It gives off a very strong and unpleasant odor. You will also often notice a black, sticky paste. It is typically found in the lateral and central grooves of the frog. You must thoroughly clean out the hoof before any treatment. Then apply a drying, antiseptic product. Pine tars or copper sulfate-based solutions are often effective. Cracks are vertical fissures in the wall. They can be superficial or very deep. Cracks require the professional opinion of a farrier. You treat a crack with repairing balms. These products stimulate the growth of new, healthy horn. Regular horse hoof care is the best prevention against these problems.

What is the essential care routine for healthy, resistant hooves?

The essential care routine starts with daily cleaning out. You remove all dirt, bedding and any stones. This is the most important step for cleanliness. You then inspect the sole and the frog. You look for signs of thrush or abnormal heat. You then apply the appropriate ointment or grease. The choice depends directly on the horse's immediate environment. In dry, hot periods, hydration is always favored. In humid periods, protection against excess water is essential. Regular trimming by the farrier is fundamental. It should ideally be carried out every six to eight weeks. Good horse hoof care combines daily hygiene with professional intervention.

How much does hoof care cost?

The cost of hoof care varies according to several factors. Regular trimming carried out by a farrier is the main cost. This service generally costs between 50 and 80 euros. Ointments and greases represent a secondary cost. A quality pot of ointment lasts several months. Prices range between 15 and 40 euros for care products. Specific treatments against thrush cost a bit more. These expenses are essential to your horse's health. Investing in horse hoof care prevents heavier veterinary expenses. Always ask your farrier for a clear quote.
