Apiguard 3 kg from the laboratory VITA BeeHealth is a veterinary medicine intended for the treatment of varroosis in the domestic bee.
Varroosis is caused by the Varroa destructor Parasite, an external mite that parasitises adult bees and capped brood. This parasite weakens the colony by drawing on vital resources. It also promotes the transmission of viruses, notably deformed wing virus.
Without rigorous sanitary control, infestation by the Varroa Parasite can lead to a population decline, a decrease in honey production and an increased risk of winter collapse.
The 3 kg tub format is particularly aimed at professional beekeepers or operations with a large number of hives.
Apiguard contains thymol, an active substance of natural origin derived from thyme.
Thymol acts through gradual evaporation within the hive. The vapours released exert an acaricidal action on the Varroa Parasite present on adult bees.
The effectiveness of the treatment depends on several factors, notably outdoor temperature and hive configuration. Following official recommendations optimises results.
Apiguard fits into an integrated pest management strategy against the Varroa Parasite. This approach combines monitoring of infestation levels, alternation of active substances and adherence to treatment periods.
Veterinary treatment against the Varroa destructor Parasite
Formula based on thymol
Economical format for professional apiaries
Suited to large-scale sanitary plans
Integration into a controlled management of varroosis
The 3 kg tub allows preparation adapted to the needs of the apiary. It offers a practical solution for treating a large number of colonies.
Apiguard should be used as one treatment among others within an Integrated Pest Management programme against varroosis. Varroa mite fall should be monitored regularly. If mite fall is significant during the following winter or spring, it is recommended to use another varroosis treatment in winter or spring.
The effectiveness of the product is optimised if it is used at the end of summer after the honey harvest, i.e. when the amount of brood decreases.
This product must not be used during the honey flow
If the hives are heavily infested, first carry out a trickling treatment with oxalic acid using Apibioxal or Oxybee. This treatment will only eliminate "phoretic varroa" and not the varroa within sealed brood! It nevertheless helps to reduce varroa pressure.
Then, carry out a treatment with Apiguard 1 tray 2 x 2 weeks, then at the end of December for example, carry out another trickling treatment with Apibioxal, Varromed or Oxybee, if possible without brood.
WARNING, for Oxybee and Apiguard products, pay very close attention to temperatures, read the product leaflet carefully for optimal use. Bees do not like the smell of Thymol and essential oils, so be careful of heat, the product must not evaporate too quickly.
Apiguard is a veterinary beekeeping medicine based on thymol used against the Varroa destructor Parasite. It comes in gel form. Thymol diffuses into the hive through evaporation. This diffusion acts on the mites present on adult bees.
Apiguard helps reduce parasite pressure before wintering or as part of an annual sanitary plan.
Apivar is a veterinary medicine based on amitraz used against the Varroa Parasite. In France, veterinary medicines are governed by specific regulations. Their supply depends on their administrative status.
Please refer to the regulations in force and seek advice from a qualified professional for the purchase and use of treatments against the Varroa Parasite.
Effectiveness depends on the beekeeping context, the level of infestation and the sanitary calendar. No single treatment suits all situations. Authorised solutions include thymol, amitraz or certain organic acids. Each molecule has specific indications and constraints.
An effective strategy against the Varroa Parasite relies on regular monitoring, alternation of active substances and adherence to good beekeeping practices.
Treatment with Apivar is generally carried out after the honey harvest, once the supers have been removed.
This period helps limit residues in hive products. It also helps reduce Varroa Parasite pressure before winter.
The exact timing depends on the local climate and the brood cycle. It is recommended to follow official guidelines and the recommendations of beekeeping health organisations.
